Learning Outcomes The following are the learning objectives for the Creative Writing major: 1.When completing a creative writing major or minor, you may not select either the major or minor in writing offered by the Rhetoric Department.If majoring in both English and creative writing, you cannot count more than two ENG-courses toward the creative writing major.See the English Department for further information.Description Creative Writing majors develop their writing craft under the guidance of award-winning writers in small workshop settings in creative nonfiction, fiction, or poetry.Students majoring in Creative Writing may take introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, as well as courses in literature, language, literary analysis, publishing, and elective courses in a range of topics in the research specialties of our internationally renowned faculty.Creative Writing majors are prepared for careers after graduation through access to a large and growing internship program, courses in writing and publishing, access to many of today’s most important and influential writers, a Professional and Technical Writing certificate program, special career development events, a study abroad program in London, and a competitive English Honors program.Students select one genre of concentration: fiction, nonfiction, or poetry.In addition to five core courses (215, 280, 380, 373A, and 373B) students take three workshops within their genre (200-level, 300-level, 400-level) as well as one other 200-level workshop outside of their concentration.Prospective creative writing majors should plan on taking a creative writing course each semester; within that guideline, there is a good deal of flexibility in how to complete the major.Courses should be chosen in consultation with a faculty advisor in the English Department.
